“Neanderthal Bone Flute,” by Rose Kelleher
November 10, 2010
Yesterday’s poem by Heid E. Erdrich reminded me of this one, which serenades someone: one of the jut-chinned girls.
Apologies to any Slovenian who happens by and hears me mangle the name of the archaeological site where the flute was discovered, “Divje Babe.” I couldn’t find a pronunciation online, so I reconstructed one using a phonetic alphabet on Wikipedia. Maybe hearing a more mellifluous reconstruction will cleanse the palates of your ears? Watch a reconstruction of the flute and listen to it being played, right here.
“Neanderthal Bone Flute,” by Rose Kelleher, was published in The Dark Horse #20.
