“Opening the Cage,” by Edwin Morgan
October 14, 2010
Today I have to say it and I am saying that nothing is poetry.
A few weeks ago, I posted all the things Don Paterson taught me about sonnets. A small, square poem, he said. I think of this one by Edwin Morgan every time I remember that definition. See?
“Opening the Cage” is in Morgan’s New Selected Poems (Carcanet, 2000).

Poetry is that nothing I say today I am saying it and have to.
Oh and yep, I do squarely see! Thanks!
