Saturday Linkenings: Lovetown, PA
For years, Nat Hentoff’s been saying that the best response to bad speech is more speech. Not censorship, better speech.
And Paul wrote to the Philippians: Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
So we’ll end the Feed’s observation of Banned Books Week with this: an artist cutting some better speech, one letter at a time, into pieces of scrap wood and lining it along miles of Philadelphia streets for neighbors there, and us here, to think on.
Here’s the entire photo album of the project.
Gene Schmidt’s Lovetown photos are featured in Ruminate #17. That’s where I discovered them.
