“The Best of It,” by Kay Ryan

July 20, 2010

A poem that could be one bean and we’d rejoice if it flourishes.

Kay Ryan included “The Best of It ” in her book, The Niagara River (Grove Press, 2005).

My wife is the poetry fan and I subscribed to this feed for her benefit (mostly) and to expand my poetry-world. That being said, I love the attitude in this poem. Thank you!

Glad you’re both here, Brian. Thanks for giving poems a chance–I hope there’s never any pressure here to admire or appreciate, but plenty of opportunity.

And I know exactly what you mean about this poem’s attitude. I have to say, though, that I like it even better because it nearly works on the bitter, cynical days, too: “As if one bean could nourish us.” Ambiguity!
